Many people can take credit for the development of this Sport Fishing Curriculum Intermediate Edition, for it truly was a team effort. The initial step was taken by the Aquatic Resource Education Council who provided support for the development of aquatic resource education programs by developing the Aquatic Resources Education Curriculum, a manual for teachers, in 1987. Without this momentous preliminary step, supported by the AFTMA Sport Fishing Educational Foundation, the development of this student manual might not have happened.

Both the author, Bob Schmidt, and the graphic artist, John Rice, have produced outstanding work to ensure the highest quality student materials available for aquatic resources education.

The experience, support, and suggestions of aquatic education professionals from thirteen states and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had notable impact in shaping the content, scope, and sequence of this curriculum. George Babey's exceptional dedication is acknowledged for his extensive review of the technical aquatic education segments of the text. In addition, gratitude is extended to the following group of professionals who critically reviewed the entire text:

  • Arkansas Game and Fish Commission-Sloan Lessley
  • Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Fisheries-George Babey
  • Minnesota Division of Fish and Wildlife- Linda Erickson-Eastwood, Ilo Howard, and Roger Grosslein
  • Minnesota Division of Parks and Recreation-Judy Thomson
  • North Carolina Wildlife Commission-Kim Garner
  • New Mexico Game and Fish Department-Dan Shaw and Don MacCarter
  • Ohio Division of Wildlife-James R. Wentz, Steve Gray, Ken Fritz, Dave Ross and Jim Schoby
  • Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation-Richard Fuller
  • Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife-Bill Hastie
  • Pennsylvania Fish Commission-Stephen B. Ulsh
  • Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries-Ann Skalski
  • Washington Department of Wildlife-Michael O'Malley
  • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources-Tammy Peterson
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service-Gary Edwards, Chuck Dunn, Steve Taub and Dave McDaniels

In addition the following associations and individuals assisted in the review and development of specific sections of the curriculum:

  • American Fisheries Society-Paul Brouha
  • Bureau of Land Management-Jack Williams
  • United States Coast Guard-Hunt Anderson
  • Izaak Walton League of America-David Dickson
  • Sport Fishing Institute-Norville Prosser

A cadre of exceptional teachers developed student activities that will be of interest to students of all ages, especially to those in the middle grades and junior high school:

  • Sidney W. Burnett, Shinnston, WV
  • Rudolph J. Cassetti, Jr., Shelton, CT
  • Judy Elsey, Terre Haute, IN
  • Frank Kucharski, Chester, CT
  • Ricky R. Murray, Clarksburg, WV
  • Richard E. Pratt, III, Nutter Fort, WV
  • Ben Wernz, Terre Haute, IN

A special thanks is extended to Sharon Rushton, Director of Education for the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association, for her untiring efforts in communicating with, between, and among the state aquatic education and association professionals and the editor. Her labors have greatly enhanced the quality of the text.

This intermediate level Sport Fishing Aquatic Resources Education Student Curriculum was made possible through the American Fishing Tackle Manufacturers Association (AFTMA) Sport Fishing Educational Foundation. The Association's leadership is to be commended for its farsightedness and concern for the long-term advancement of aquatic resources by sponsoring the development of aquatic resources educational programs.
