Fishing Lines Still fly in Winter
By Lu Snyder, [email protected]

SUMMIT COUNTY It was only in the mid-20s Monday morning, but to Silverthorne residents Perry Apfelbeck and Ford Williams, it was downright balmy. They started ice fishing at first light, before the sun provided any warmth.

Neither man is a fair-weather fisherman.

For many others like Apfelbeck and Williams, the fishing season doesnt stop when the snow falls. Though ice fishing is an exclusively winter sport, fly fishing can be enjoyed in winter too.

Its a good time of year for fishing, said Zeke Hersh, owner of Blue River Anglers in Breckenridge. The rivers are low, which tends to make fish congregate in the pools. A lot of the time, you can catch numerous fish in one area one pool.

Hersh has been fly fishing for 15 years, and cold weather doesnt keep him inside. For him, fly fishing is less about the fish than it is about the getting out of the house and enjoying the serenity of the outdoors.
