Boaters take to water for cleanup day - Monofilament line, other trash will be hauled
By BETSY CLAYTON, [email protected]
Up to 500 boaters will comb Lee County waterways Sunday for fishing line and trash.
Monofilament Madness marine cleanup day is in its ninth year of turning recreational boaters and anglers into trash haulers for a morning. More than 300 boats are expected.
Anyone can volunteer and then boat or drive the garbage they collect to various Pine Island and Estero Island sites, where they'll be treated to free barbecue.
"Previous Monofilament Madness cleanups have produced enough discarded fishing line to stretch from Fort Myers to Tallahassee," said Rudy Busch, executive director of Keep Lee County Beautiful Inc., which also sponsors Coastal Cleanup Day each September.
Monofilament Madness is the brainchild of anglers Larry Davis and Dave Westra, who owns Lehr's Economy Tackle in North Fort Myers. They wanted to pluck wads of fishing line from mangroves -- popular places for anglers to cast beneath. Often they miss, cut the line and split.
