Kennedy to speak on conservation -'Deeply passionate' defender of environment is helping launch Grand Traverse Baykeeper program

TRAVERSE CITY - It's hard to imagine the crystal blue waters of Grand Traverse Bay looking anything less than pristine.
But Robert F. Kennedy Jr. believes that in 10 years the bay waters could be forever changed if steps aren't taken now to protect and preserve them.
"The communities around Grand Traverse Bay are communities that historically, culturally and economically are linked to waterways. But those values today are being eroded in some ways by sprawl-style development which threatens water quality and the quality of life," Kennedy said in a phone interview Wednesday.
Kennedy, the son of the late Robert F. Kennedy and president of the worldwide Waterkeeper Alliance, will be at the Grand Traverse Resort tonight to help the Watershed Center of Grand Traverse Bay launch its Grand Traverse Baykeeper program.
The fund-raising dinner and private champagne reception featuring Kennedy are sold out, said Watershed Center executive director Anne Brasie.
