| Florida:
Lake Ocklawaha (Rodman Reservoir) |
Rodman Reservoir (Lake Ocklawaha) in Florida's Putnam County was formed in 1969 by the Army Corps of Engineers when a four gate spillway and dam was built on the Ocklawaha River. Originally the reservoir and its dredged out channel was to be part of the Cross Florida Barge Canal which would have let commercial and other vessels cross the state of Florida between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The discontinued project nevertheless created a lake about 15 miles long covering 9,500 acres, much of it superior black bass habitat. The reservoir has many cypress and palm trees broken off just under the water surface, particularly in the north and south stump fields. Standing timber is marked on the map. There are many floating logs, especially after a storm, which are hazardous to navigation. Care must be taken while boating out of the marked barge canal or the Ocklawaha River channel. Boaters also should use extreme caution when moving across lake flats. Whenever possible, follow Office of Greenways Trails navigation aids. Channels west of Cedar Landing are marked with buoys. Navigation aids are now provided and maintained by the Office of Greenways and Trails.
