| Florida:
Saint Johns River |
|
The St. Johns River forms from the flow of marsh headwaters in east central Florida and flows north into the Atlantic Ocean at Mayport. Several underwater springs discharge into the St. Johns River, moderating water temperature but also introducing saltier water which attracts marine species such as blue crabs and rays.
Springs are a major source of nutrients, high in nitrogen, but also serve as summer refuges for striped bass and winter refuges for manatees. The Corps of Engineers maintains the river for commercial navigation.
