Built in 1953, Montgomery State Fishing Lake is a 105-acre impoundment located four miles south and one mile east of Independence. In addition to the 105-acre lake, 303 acres of terrestrial habitat provide an abundance of wildlife. This provides excellent habitat diversity for a variety of wildlife. The lake was renovated in 1984 to eliminate undesirable fish and prevent contamination after restocking. It was reopened tof ishing in January 1, 1987. Fish species present are largemouth bass, white crappie, walleye, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and flathead catfish.
