Fly Fishing Basics
Fly Fishing
The art of fly fishing dates back to at least the 3rd century A.D. and so is one of the oldest forms of sport fishing. Its adherents- and they are legion- say that it is also the most artistic form of the sport.
Fly fishing is unique in two basic ways: in all other forms of fishing, the weight of the lure or bait is what enables the angler to cast; in fly fishing, the weight of the line itself is the cast. In spinning, spin-casting and baitcasting, for the most part, a natural bait or a lure or plug imitating a natural bait is offered to the fish; the fly fisherman’s offering is a near weightless bit of feathers and hair that imitates some insect in one of its forms of life (though some flies- streams and bucktails- imitate baitfish).
You can find detailed information about rods and reels used for fly fishing and how to fly cast in the Complete Outdoors Encyclopedia. To order an autographed copy of this 830-page comprehensive volume , contact Vin T. Sparano, the author, at: [email protected]
