New Brighton agrees to create fishing park
By Bob Janis, [email protected]

Council voted 7-2 for the park, with Councilmen William Ashton and Richard Haddox voting against the park.

Haddox would not specify a reason for his disapproval, but Ashton said the borough should use its resources for other projects. "My senior citizens would rather have sidewalks," Ashton said.

The park will have a 200-foot stone pier and several areas strewn with boulders for fishermen to use as they cast out.

"I've been told that some of the best fishing in Pennsylvania is located right below the dam," said borough Manager Larry Morley. "Right now, most of that area is fenced in, and people have to go down some old steps by the dam to reach the river."

Morley said the idea for a fishing park has been in the works since the early 1990s but finally came about through funding from the Beaver County Corporation for Economic Development.
