Fishing tips for visiting anglers
By Jerry Hill, [email protected]

Barring any real horrible weather, local waters will be occupied with a few more anglers the next couple of weeks as Christmas visitors from more northern latitudes try to get in a bit of fishing.

With water temperatures at or below 60 degrees, and no party boat operations locally, this season their opportunities will be limited.

Serious visiting Waltonians can book a guide or charterboat and almost guarantee a decent catch.

Others would probably be best served by fishing any of the public or private fishing piers such as Anna Maria City Pier, Rod and Reel Pier, Bradenton Beach Pier, Green Bridge Fishing Pier or the grand-daddy of all the world's fishing piers, the South Skyway Pier, which is located on U.S. 19 en route to St. Petersburg.

And in late December their target should be sheepshead, which are gathering in clouds around most of the structures mentioned.

Sheepshead feed on a wide variety of marine creatures, but your best bet will probably be live shrimp. A whole shrimp is not necessarily needed but most sheepies will turn up their noses at one or parts of one that has been dead too long.
