Conservation expo draws big crowd

FARMINGTON - Maine's first exposition devoted to erosion control and other conservation topics was a resounding success, according to those in charge of the event.
Organizer Rosetta Thompson, manager of the Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation District, said the one-day event recently held at the University of Maine at Farmington attracted more than 100 people, some from as far away as Portland and Millinocket.
"Several towns and construction companies sent three or four people. We also had a good showing among citizens, especially those concerned with protecting water quality," Thompson said.
Twenty-eight different workshops were presented and some had to be repeated. Thompson said average attendance at workshops was 15.
Among the more popular workshops was one titled "Drainage, Drainage, Drainage," presented by Cliff Curtis of the Maine Department of Transportation. Also popular was a session on designing and planting buffers presented by Karen Hahnid of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection.
