Enjoyable boating for you and your dog
By Jeff Munshauer columnist

I'm ready to get out in the boat. This holiday period is usually prime for boating. As we know though, the water is a little high right now. But when it drops, I'll be out and so will my dog. I've written about dogs in your car, but what about the boat?

Of course, some dogs earn their keep in a boat. Retrievers and certain detection dogs go through lengthy training sessions on the water. Just about any dog, though, will love to ride in the boat. Most are just happy to be with you. I've had a couple that would swim out to me if I left them ashore. But be smart about putting your dog in the boat.

Your initial introduction is important and should follow guidelines. Take the dog for short boat rides without a lot of silliness. Maintain positive control with a leash until Pup settles into the routine. From there it's a matter of lengthening the rides and providing the dog with experiences he will encounter with you-skiing, fishing, nets, sailing, etc.

There are other precautions you need to take. The largest drawback for Fido is the heat. A lot of boats don't have shade so a tarp might come in handy. Bright and reflected sunlight will also hurt the dog's eyes. The combination of direct sun and heat will dehydrate your companion quickly. This should all sound familiar. We suffer the same effects. Make sure you have a plan to counter them for Pup.
