North Carolinians Debate Future of Ocean Fishing Piers
Wilmington - They extend like wooden dinosaurs reaching their long necks out over the ocean.
The fishing piers along North Carolina beaches were there before, in some cases, the large oceanfront rentals, the restaurants and I-40 that brought lines of traffic to largely unpopulated areas like Bogue Banks and Topsail Island. For most visitors, moving from pier to pier is better than any map or compass.
But the popular landmarks have dwindled since 1996. As storms come, piers are damaged and not rebuilt. Beams rot and break and are not replaced.
Some say the time of the pier has passed.
Others disagree and point to high ticket sales and busy days where fishing lines dangle off the sides like the legs of a centipede. They say the business has only changed with time.
