Conservationists Oppose Faster Oil and Gas Permitting
By The Associated Press
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) Conservation groups have announced their opposition to any efforts to speed up approval of oil and gas projects on public land.
The Wyoming Energy Commission recently developed recommendations for how the Legislature can boost energy development in Wyoming. One responsibility of the commission was to find a way to streamline the oil and gas permitting process.
Scott Groene of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition said streamlining is shorthand for getting rid of environmental safeguards.
The coalition and other conservation groups say the permitting process moves slowly for a reason to make sure oil and gas development does not destroy wildlife.
Dan Heilig of the Wyoming Outdoor Council said speeding up the process would force federal agencies to cut corners and make mistakes.
