Boy Builds Toy Boats to Set Sail on Mission to Honor Sept. 11
TAMPA - An 8-year-old boy who built toy boats that carry a message for the victims of Sept. 11 had a single wish for his pine creations: that they sail out as far to sea as possible.
The U.S. Coast Guard decided to help Justin Clark complete his project, ferrying his 16 boats Monday into the Gulf of Mexico on the 110-foot patrol boat Pea Island.
A few of the boats were released Monday afternoon, and the crew plans to release a few boats at a time during their two- to five-day mission, Coast Guard spokesman Robert Suddarth said.
The locations where the numbered boats are dropped into the water will be recorded and given to Justin to help him track their progress.
With his grandfather's help, Justin created the 8-inch-long boats.
