Pump Boat Could Improve Sanitation
By David Grima
CAMDEN - The waters of Camden and Rockport harbors could run a little sweeter if state government comes through with funds for a sanitary water pump-out boat.
The boat should bring a definite improvement to water quality in and around the two harbors, according to Camden Town Manager Roger Moody, by giving boaters more incentive to stop discharging their head waste directly into the harbor. Some theorize boaters discharge waste directly into the harbor rather than at a pump station that is accessible only during limited tidal conditions.
Camden's select board voted Monday to file an application with the Department of Environmental Protection for $79,010, representing 90 percent of the cost of the boat and associated dockside improvements, operations and maintenance. The town's share would be $7,901.
The boat would be required to serve both Camden and Rockport harbors, Moody said, and would also be used to empty a pump-out tank at North Haven.
Some of the money, $6,950, would be spent to improve the pump-out point at Wayfarer Marine, where the pump-boat would discharge its own tanks. In its current condition, the Wayfarer pump-out point is not accessible during all tides.
