Bass Fishing To Get A Boost
By Robert Sargent Jr., [email protected]
WEBSTER -- The Sport Fishing Capital of the World has received sizable help to cope with increasing environmental problems.
Pollution is damaging lakes and rivers across Florida, choking the water with algae and killing off aquatic plants. Drought is dropping water levels, drawing back shorelines and exposing essential water habitat.
The result is that bass and other freshwater sport fish are not proliferating in many once-plentiful lakes and rivers. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is depending more on its sole fish hatchery, south of this Sumter County town, to bring fish populations back up.
Fish and Wildlife recently granted $3.3 million for a massive expansion of the Richloam Fish Hatchery.
The Florida Bass Conservation Center will be a state-of-the-art research facility dedicated to boosting the number of largemouth bass -- a trophy catch among anglers around the world.
