HUNTING & FISHING: Trolling at Lake McClure
By Ron Wilson
Saturday and Sunday I fished Lake McClure, trolling for trout with Doug Jensen of Turlock.
Doug had been asking questions about trolling for fish for a couple years, so I called him Saturday morning to see if he wanted an on-the-water demonstration.
We arrived at the lake a little after 10 a.m. and headed to Cottonwood arm. I showed Doug how I rigged up with lead core line. I told him 12-pound test lead core is the best for trout in my book and that I use 10-pound leader off that.
I feel it's best to use 75 to 100 feet of leader. That way I get some fight out of the fish. All I use on the end of the leader is a wire snap that I use to attach different-colored lures.
I then showed him how I used the downriggers. I use Vance's yellow downrigger releases off the wire and I like a 10-pound ball because I will troll from 1 to 4 mph, depending on how much water I want to cover and how the fish are reacting to the lures I am using. The heavy downrigger weights don't swing back as far as the lighter ones when trolling fast.
