Drug Boat Is Scuttled Off Lake Worth To Create Fish Habitat
By Kathy Bushouse, [email protected]

ABOARD THE DIVE BOAT RAMPAGE * The gaping square cutouts in the side of the Shasha Boekanier welcomed an onslaught of seawater, slowly dragging the freighter-turned-drug-boat to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for its new life as an artificial reef.

But the 185-foot, 678-ton ship didn't vanish into the slightly choppy ocean on a sunny, breezy Sunday morning with Titanic-style drama.

Rather than plunge to the ocean floor stern-first with its bow towering over the waves, the Shasha Boekanier -- pronounced "buccaneer" -- took on water like a bathtub toy and simply disappeared from sight after about 10 minutes.

Curious onlookers might have wanted something flashier, but the Shasha Boekanier's quick trip to the bottom was just fine with Bob Deacy, who has watched the scuttling of several ships.

"We've been out here hours sometimes, begging them to go," said Deacy, public outreach program supervisor for Palm Beach County's Department of Environmental Resources Management.
