Agencies Fishing For River Data
By Francis P. Garland, [email protected]
VALLEY SPRINGS -- The California Department of Water Resources is trolling the Calaveras River for a little fish history.
The agency is seeking information on steelhead and salmon in the river or any of its tributaries, particularly before the 1940s, to get a better sense of how fish have used the river, historically speaking.
The Calaveras County Water District told some customers about the search last month and will tell the rest later this month to jog a few memories of close steelhead or salmon encounters.
The state and local water entities are looking for old family photographs, newspaper articles or any remembrances of the fish being caught in the river.
So far, the water district has heard from several people who claim they've caught salmon and/or steelhead, or have seen people land one or both of those species. But all of them were caught below New Hogan Dam, which was built around 1963 and replaced an earlier dam built some 30 years earlier.
