Miami Boat Show Attendance Is Up 6 Percent
By Herald Staff
Boating enthusiasts had pushed attendance at the 61st Miami International Boat Show up 6 percent over last year by Tuesday afternoon, the show's last day. Final figures were due Wednesday.
Nearly 143,000 came to one of the marine industry's biggest exhibits of boats and accessories. Attendance at the same time last year was 135,001, said Cathy Johnston, southern regional manager of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the show's sponsor. Total attendance in 2000 was about 148,000.
Johnston said sales of smaller boats, which had been lagging, were picking up. Overall sales figures were not available.
''We walk away from the show very encouraged,'' said Phil Bennett, senior sales director for The Hinckley Co., a well-known Maine boatbuilder.
Hinckley doesn't consider its boats impulse buys, so it was pleased to have several firm orders, including one for a 29-foot Talaria, which goes for about $250,000, and a 36-foot Picnic Boat, priced at about $425,000.
