Rules To Prevent Water Pollution Lack Funding, County Conservationist Says

Two state agencies have proposed stricter regulations prohibiting polluted water runoff from construction sites, golf courses, farms and road projects.
However, the state has no additional money to provide the cleanup assistance it promises to farmers or to enforce the new rules, said Dean Kaatz, Marathon County land conservationist.
"There's nowhere near enough money to make a real significant dent in this problem," Kaatz said. "If we're going to really get serious about this in Wisconsin, we have to have more money from the state level to carry out this program." Many farmers already were preventing runoff, Kaatz added.
Gene Christian of the town of Maine said he has been working to prevent water pollution for the 28 years he's been farming, and his father did so before him.
"We've got to have clean water, and we have to save our soil, or we won't have anything for future generations," Christian said.
