Conservationists Urge BLM To Protect Adobe Town
By The Associated Press
GREEN RIVER (AP) Biodiversity Associates has asked the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to protect more than 40,000 acres in southwestern Wyoming.
The Laramie-based conservation group wants the land near Adobe Town designated as a wilderness study area. The 200,000-acre Adobe Town is south of Wamsutter and home to wild horses, badlands and desert.
Eric Molvar of Biodiversity Associates said a BLM report recently identified the wilderness-quality land. Wilderness study areas are protected until Congress decides whether to develop them.
The agency has taken an important first step in identifying and protecting some of Americas best remaining wildlands for the public benefit, he said.
Conservationists have said a seismic mapping project could lead to more oil and gas drilling in the region. About half of the Adobe Town area is off-limits to development.
