Boating banned on Bighorn Lake
LOVELL, Wyo. (AP) - Low water prompted Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area officials on Monday to close all boat ramps and ban boating on Bighorn Lake.
The lake's elevation was 3,587 feet, 53 feet below full pool, leaving the Kane, Horseshoe Bend, Barry's Landing and Ok-A-Beh ramps dry.
Officials said the situation has made it impossible to safely launch boats on the reservoir straddling the Montana state line.
At least 4 more feet of water is needed to allow boats to be launched and docks installed at Barry's Landing, and another 9 or 10 feet is needed at Ok-A-Beh.
Officials doubt the Horseshoe Bend ramp will be useable this summer.
Some ice remains on the lake but it has become thin. Ice fishing is also banned.
