Conservation gets a boost - Panhandle organizations granted share of $11 million
By Bruce Ritchie, [email protected]

Two Big Bend area groups are benefiting from a foundation's $11 million donation to promote conservation in South Alabama, Southwest Georgia and the Florida Panhandle.

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation announced in early 2001 that it is donating to conservation in the region, which includes an area on the Florida Panhandle that some scientists have identified as one the nation's six biological "hot spots."

Apalachicola Bay and River Keeper and the Apalachee Ecological Conservancy each will receive $10,000 grants indirectly from the foundation to work with local governments on growth issues. Both are based in Franklin County.

Other groups that are receiving the foundation's money to work in the region include The Nature Conservancy, the Tall Timbers Research Station and The Georgia Conservancy.

"Florida's Panhandle is distinctive," Peter Howell, the foundation's program director, said Monday. "We want to make sure that community leaders have all the tools they need to protect this special landscape for their children and grandchildren to enjoy."
