TVA survey reveals healthy fish population
By Dennis Sherer, [email protected]

MUSCLE SHOALS -- It came as no shock to Donny Lowery on Wednesday to find plenty of bass in Wilson Lake.

He was not surprised when TVA biologists captured several large bass while surveying Wilson Lake. Lowery, a Tennessee Valley Authority fisheries biologist, has called the portion of the Tennessee River that flows through the Shoals one of the best places on the planet to catch a bass.

"These are great lakes for fishing. Everything looks good with the lakes. The fish populations are good, and the fish are healthy," Lowery said after the scientists collected 24 bass in 30 minutes from a single cove in Fleet Hollow. The catch included five bass that weighed more than 3 pounds each and a 11/2-pound crappie.

"We didn't get the numbers I was expecting, but the severe weather Tuesday probably pushed the bass off the banks into deep water," he said.

The scientists use special boats equipped with generators that deliver a 700-volt electrical shock to fish through metal electrodes that extend into the water.
