Fishermen will have to go elsewhere
By Michael A. de Yoanna
An aquatic biologist for the state Division of Wildlife said a small fishing lake in an East Boulder park is unlikely to be restocked unless there is significant rainfall in the coming months.
On Wednesday, the Wildlife Division was joined by city water experts in an investigation to determine why an estimated 1,000 large-mouthed bass, green sunfish, grass carp, bull-heads and other kinds of fish died in Thunderbird Lake at Arleigh Burke park.
The kill represented about 98 percent of the fish population in the lake.
After city officials analyzed water to find that only half the oxygen necessary for the survival of fish existed in the shallow lake, they concluded drought conditions were to blame for the deaths of the fish.
"It was several hot days early in the year that make it ideal for an algae bloom," Randy Van Buren, a biologist with the Wildlife Division, said. "Then there were several days without water."
