Teacher introduces children to fishing through program
By By Frank Carroll
ST. CLOUD -- "Fishing every day" has topped a Dan Sardina wish list since age 5.
"I haven't been able to do that, but it's what I'd most like to do," said Sardina, 36, an Osceola County teacher passionate about teaching youngsters fishing's fun and facts.
Sardina introduced Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs, an award-winning drug prevention program administered by the Future Fisherman Foundation, to 60 Hickory Tree Elementary fourth- and fifth-graders this past term.
Geared to provide an alternative to drugs through fishing, the program had a bonus side effect.
"It got kids, who otherwise might not, to read," Sardina said.
