SUMMERSVILLE -- The annual summer trout stocking at the Gauley River proved to be a traumatic experience today for the 2,000 pounds of fish whose new homes waited in the gorge below.
Before being transported to the sky, frantic fish tried to escape to the unfriendly pavement before they were loaded into barrels. Those that did hit the ground were quickly returned to their confinement.

Johnson said the project is a way to say thanks to the fishermen who are inconvenienced by the thousands of Gauley River rafters each season.
