Ok-A-Beh ramp ready for boats

Water levels at Ok-A-Beh at the north end of Bighorn Canyon Recreation Area are expected to be marginally adequate for boat launching by Friday. Supt. Darrell Cook said water levels on the ramp could vary from about 36 inches to 48 inches Friday. He said that to safely launch and retrieve boats, boaters should keep the lower unit of their vessels in the up position during the launch, and use normal precautions for shallow water when taking boats out.

Because of low water levels, the launch ramp at Ok-A-Beh is narrower than usual and can only accommodate one boat launch at a time. Boaters are advised to prep off the ramp before trying to launch.

Rangers will be on hand at the ramp to help boaters during the weekend, and a shortened courtesy dock will be available to boaters. The marina at Ok-A-Beh is now open with full service. Low water levels will prevent the swimming beach from opening.

The boat launch ramps at Kane and Horseshoe Bend are not expected to open this summer. Boat access to Black Canyon and Medicine Creek campgrounds is impossible because of low water levels.

The Yellowtail Dam Visitor Center is open to the public, but tours are no longer available because of heightened security in the wake of 9/11.
