Fishing for a record
By Brian Wallheimer

Todd Caldwell tried to display a bit of American pride on the nation's birthday Thursday by capturing a world record for breeding the world's biggest koi, a fish that is predominantly bred by the Japanese.

Caldwell, of the 2300 block of South Ninth Street, attempted to set a record for the largest 2-year-old koi. He said koi, a breed of carp, are raised in ponds, though he raised his in a 500-gallon tank in his basement.

Charlie and Norma Jean were spawned two years ago Thursday and share their birthday with the United States.

Thursday, Caldwell measured and weighed his two hikari muji, a type of koi. And while Charlie and Norma Jean aren't as big as he had hoped, Caldwell was pleased with the results.

"We've been breeding for size for 15 years," Caldwell said. "This is kind of the culmination of it."
