Safe boating urged at riverside Handy event
By Russ Corey
FLORENCE - While today's Riverside Jazz event is certain to entice boaters to the waters off McFarland Park, they need to remember not to become too relaxed.
Shoals Waterways Safety Coalition Chairman Jim Loew expects increased boater participation in this year's five-hour musical event.
"What a great way to spend a summer evening," Loew said. "Relaxing on a boat anchored off beautiful McFarland Park, listening to wonderful jazz and blues performed by some of the best musicians."
But unlike those comfortably occupying their lounge chairs on land, boaters have to remain alert to what is happening around them.
"Boaters have significant responsibilities for the safety of their vessels and passengers, and for safer interaction between other vessels," Loew said.
First and foremost, boaters should wear their lifejackets and be sure to have one on board for all passengers. Lifejackets or vests should be the correct size for the wearers.
