Auburndale's Lee Sisson Designs Popular Fishing Lures
By Del Milligan
AUBURNDALE--Growing older hits people in different ways.
For Lee Sisson of Auburndale, it was seeing one of the fishing lures he created pictured in an antique lure book.
"It's kind of scary when you look in an antique lure collection book and you find lures that you built," Sisson said. "The first time I did that I went, 'Wow!' It was almost as much of a shocker as the first time I picked up my grandson."
Sisson, 54, designs colorful, hand-made wooden fishing lures effective in the pursuit of gamefish like bass, muskie, snook and stripers.
The lure innovator was one of the first to realize the potential of deep-diving crankbaits in the early 1970s, before the cast-and-reel style lures became a staple in every angler's tacklebox.
"There weren't any deep-diving crankbaits, as such, at that time," Sisson said. "I designed the lure which became the DB-3. That was the first true deep-diving crankbait there was."
