Oconto's Breakwater Park a bonus for anglers, boaters
By Bill Borneman
Where the Oconto River meets with the waters of Green Bay, Oconto's Breakwater Park, is considered a luxury for scores of local anglers and boating enthusiasts, plus a growing number of visitors.
There is parking available for 80 vehicles, making it easily accessible for fishing enthusiasts to launch their boats. There also are rest rooms and a shelter with picnic tables on the grounds.
And you don't necessarily need a boat to enjoy fishing at the Breakwater. You can fish from the shoreline on the Oconto River side or fish from either side of the Splinter Causeway. The causeway extends nearly a quarter of a mile, allowing persons to park their vehicles and then toss out their lines.
Twice in the past five years, Oconto has hosted a Masters/Walleye tournament, attracting champion anglers from numerous states.
During extreme high water level periods of the early 1970s and mid-1980s, erosion threatened the Breakwater. But thanks to grant monies, the Army Corps of engineers re-enforced the Breakwater with hundreds of tons of rocks.
