Free fishing clinic offers instruction to kids, adults
By Beth Feinstein-Bartl
Parents and children can reel in a good time Saturday during a free family fishing clinic.
The session is scheduled noon to 4 p.m. at the International Game Fish Association Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum, at 300 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach. Advance registration is not required.
The family clinics, a regular feature, have become popular with the public. Past sessions have attracted up to 100 people, said Linda Irwin, the museum's special events coordinator.
"Fishing is a family sport," said Evadne Masters, assistant to the museum's executive director. "This gives parents and children an opportunity to learn the same techniques together."
Participants can bring gear or use equipment supplied by the museum at no cost, Masters said. The clinics are conducted at the stocked lake outside the facility. Catching fish is prohibited, however. Instead of hooks, students will be given casting plugs, Irwin said.
The instructor is Ron Gallo, a professional fisherman who works as a park ranger for the city of Fort Lauderdale. He will demonstrate how to catch and release fish, and how to bait hooks and casting. Instruction will be geared to all levels, from first-timers to more experienced anglers.
