Threatened sea turtles even more endangered by boat strikes
By Ludmilla Lelis and Denise-Marie Balona
PONCE INLET, Fla. - (KRT) - The weekend after the Fourth of July was no holiday for a young green sea turtle, now living at the Marine Science Center.
As the turtle swam in the Intracoastal Waterway, a boat struck it, making the reptile flip into the air. Witnesses saw a second boat stream by, striking the turtle and making it go airborne again.
This is a tough turtle. Michelle Bauer, the center's turtle rehabilitation specialist, said the twice-struck turtle, which has a shell with large chips and other marks, has a good chance at recovery.
It is one of the lucky ones. So many greens, loggerheads and other sea turtles are not.
Boat strikes are a fairly common injury among these endangered or threatened creatures.
