Water use to be regulated by groundwater conservation board
By Heath Hixon

Water officials took another step Monday toward tightening the spigot on unbridled water consumption in Montgomery County by approving a plan regulating and taxing water use.

The Lone Star Groundwater Conservation District Board of Directors voted without opposition to approve a 60-page document regulating water use by most large well owners and water suppliers in the county.

The board also voted to approve an annual tax of 5 cents per 1,000 gallons used by those users.

The water-use measure regulates wells, drilling, transportation of water and several other aspects related to groundwater use in the county. However, much of the regulation exempts owners of small wells pumping less than 25,000 gallons a day and places relatively minor restraints on larger users.

"We didn't approve restricting anybody's water," said Richard Tramm, LSGCD president. "In fact, we will issue permits not just for existing wells, but also new permits and wells."

The new regulations are effective immediately.
