Students star in conservation film

SEBASTIAN -- The statue of Paul Kroegel "came to life" in Riverview Park on Monday as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service filmed part of a national educational program about habitat restoration in Sebastian.
Kroegel, a German immigrant who single-handedly chased poachers from Indian River's islands more than a century ago, convinced President Theodore Roosevelt to declare Pelican Island the nation's first wildlife preserve.
West Virginia actor Bill Morgan portrayed Kroegel in the film, talking about the need to preserve wildlife.
The 60-minute film will air on the show "Wild Things" on Oct. 10 as a satellite distance learning project for about 10 million viewers, including middle school students, throughout the country. It is sponsored by the federal wildlife service.
In addition to Kroegel, it highlights four school-based projects in the nation, including efforts by Pelican Island Elementary School's Eco-Troop to preserve scrub jay habitat.
