Rapid City extends water conservation
By Diane Rietman, [email protected]
RAPID CITY -- Rapid City has extended water conservation restrictions an additional two months as city officials attempt to maintain water levels at Pactola Reservoir.
Water restrictions, originally scheduled to end Aug. 31, now have been extended through Oct. 31.
The drought conditions this summer, combined with increased use of water for residential use and irrigation, have dropped water levels at the reservoir 10.25 feet below normal.
That level at Pactola could be an additional eight or nine feet lower if the city hadn't purchased wells to provide additional water for the city. Wells provide 50 percent of the water for municipal use.
The restrictions apply to all users of the city water system, including Rapid City residents and wholesale users of the city's water such as Ellsworth Air Force Base and the Rapid Valley Water District.
