Female flyfishers rising
By Charlie Meyers, [email protected]

Tuesday, December 03, 2025 - Dana Rikimaru believes many women come to flyfishing through a desire to share an outdoor interest with a husband or boyfriend. By contrast, her bond with the sport that has become the primary focus of her life started well before she was born.

"My parents were driving through Yellowstone National Park on their honeymoon and my crazy father saw people flyfishing," related Rikimaru, a Littleton resident who ranks among the leading practitioners of the sport.

"He thought it was a beautiful thing to do. Then, when I was in fourth grade, he decided we'd become flyfishers. He knew nothing about it. It was a case of the blind leading the blind."

How she evolved from an angling-oriented upbringing in Orinda, in California's East Bay area, to become a leading proponent of women's flyfishing in Colorado is a story that blends happenstance with an adventuresome spirit in a way that defies conventional logic.

"I walked into the Blue Quill Angler shop one snowy spring day at a time when they were looking for guides," Rikimaru remembered. "I was between jobs with no house tying me down. I figured the worst thing that could happen was they could hate me or I could hate them and I'd go back to California."
