On the Gulf Coast, fish have anglers guessing
By Gary Simpson

The annual Gulf Coast guessing game is on, as anglers try to anticipate the movements of fish driven by both hunger and falling water temperatures.

Some reports suggest that speckled trout remain scattered and in limbo.

As one marina owner put it, "The trout aren't cold enough to move into the river, but they're too cold to bite." Grass flats must have chilled down to the point of being uncomfortable to the thin-skinned critters, but apparently some element required to send hoards of them into gulf rivers is not yet in place. Only a handful of fish has been pulled from the rivers to date. Fair numbers of whiting and small trout can be found at the Steinhatchee's mouth, and a few decent trout catches have been made in the Suwannee and Waccasassa. A larger wave of trout has moved into King's Bay in Crystal River - but these are, so far, mostly small.

Folks fishing shell bars and grass flats are still finding scattered fish - at least as many as those searching in the rivers. Grass flats out of Steinhatchee produced one of the week's best trout catches when James and Janice Bridges enticed 9 nice fish up to 27 inches while floating live shrimp.

Tidal creeks are probably the best spots of all to search for gulf trout.
