Area boaters raise money to challenge manatee slow-speed zones
By Jim Waymer

MERRITT ISLAND -- Boaters brought hundreds of residents on board their fight to prevent new manatee slow-speed zones Thursday.

They collected checks, shared their gripes against state wildlife officials and vowed to beat the government in a battle over boat speeds.

More than 600 people showed up at Kiwanis Island Park pavilion to help raise $30,000 to finance a legal challenge to stop new manatee zones in Brevard County.

Rep. Bob Allen, R-Merritt Island said the zones are not based on good science.

"The outside world thinks we're going to go away, and it's good to let them know that we're here to stay," Allen said as boaters under the pavilion applauded. "Let's hear it for these five people who are brave enough to keep going."
