Top 2 boats set to sprint to the finish
By Steve Waters
Officials with the Volvo Ocean Race get their wish Saturday, as the nine-month, 32,700-mile around the world sailboat race comes down to the final leg.
At 250 miles, Leg 9 from Gothenborg, Sweden, to Kiel, Germany, is the shortest and has the potential to be the most exciting.
Overall race leader illbruck Challenge, which has led since Leg 1, will try to hold off ASSA ABLOY, which has proven to be the best of the eight-boat fleet on short legs.
Heading into the final leg, illbruck has 54 points, and second-place ASSA has 49. If illbruck finishes fifth or better, it wins the race.
The other battle will be for third place. Tyco, News Corp and Amer Sports One each has 40 points. SEB is sixth with 29 points, followed by djuice dragons with 25 and Amer Sports Too with 11.
