A Land of Plenty For Conservation
By Nadia Villagr·n, [email protected]
RANCHO MIRAGE -- The retired co-owner of a large northwestern timber company, Tim Blixseth once made his money by cutting down trees.
A Rancho Mirage resident since 1975, Blixseth now spends that money picking up land for conservation and helping to save the endangered bighorn sheep.
A board member of the Bighorn Institute, a Palm Desert group that studies how to help the sheep recover, Blixseth has purchased about 1,445 acres of sensitive bighorn habitat in the Santa Rosa Mountains.
Blixseth bought the land to ensure it is not developed. He is now waiting for the federal government to determine if it is appropriate for a land transfer.
The government evaluates privately owned land, looking for environmentally sensitive property that should be conserved. Blixseth expects his acreage will be deemed environmentally sensitive and traded for government-owned, non-environmentally sensitive land.
