State lifts ban on commercial boats to island park
By Jim Mann
A simmering feud over commercial access to Wild Horse Island has been settled -- for the time being -- by the Montana Fish and Game Commission.
The commission decided Tuesday at a meeting in Helena that a state ban on commercial transportation to Wild Horse Island State Park must be lifted.
And the commissioners directed Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to develop a new management plan for Flathead Lake's largest island by next year. The current plan, which was to be revised in 2004, prohibits commercial services of any kind at the state park.
But Bill Myers, owner and operator of Bigfork-based Pointer Scenic Cruises, has long contended that taking his customers to the island and dropping them off does not violate that policy. Myers appealed the state policy, prompting the commission's consideration.
Formally, the commission did not act on his appeal, but lifted the prohibition until a revised management plan is developed.
