Angler's Outlook: Mild fronts set stage for great March fishing
By Red Stier, [email protected]

Southwest Florida shoreline and inland anglers were slowed a bit last week when a weak cold front moved through with brisk winds dropping the water temperature about 8 degrees. This, linked to a reappearance of red tide from the northernmost section of Collier County south to the Naples Pier, had a greater effect on anglers than those fishing the area from Gordon's Pass south. It's a good bet the weather front has slowed the red tide some by the time you read this article.

You can call the Collier County Red Tide Hotline at 732-2591 for the latest updates.

I think we are in very good weather scenario that just might continue to produce mild fronts through February, getting us to the pinnacle of our winter weather and setting the stage for a great fishing month in March on all fronts.

Fishing the shoreline and inland waters during the midday hours when it is the warmest will be the best. Fishing the bridges and docks at night for snook will produce some, but they will be slow on the bite, so work the bait slow but steady when retrieving it.

While offshore anglers were slowed, some also managed to pick and choose the good days to run to their favorite fishing spots and return with fish in the box. The rule of keeper red grouper in general is the longer you run offshore, the higher percentage of keepers and larger the fish you catch.
