Fish early, late to avoid midday heat
By Matt Pallister, [email protected]

The dog days are upon us, and at least some of the fishermen are being affected.

A certain percentage will head for the air-conditioning this time of the year. But there are ways to spend time on the water fishing while limiting exposure to the heat.

As the years go by, I am more likely to forgo the middle of the day in the heat of summer. But generally, I will still be on the water early and late. . . .

One of the better stories of the week involved retired accountant Harry Pratt celebrating his 81st birthday with sons Keith and Wyatt aboard Capt. Zach Zacharias' charterboat Dee-Jay. They caught a limit of reds to 24 inches, numerous snook to 34 inches and mangrove snapper.

Angler's Repair
Capt. Thom Smith guided Bill Packer of Bradenton and Bubba Gorp of Boonesville, Ky., to redfish to 28 inches, catch-and-release snook, spotted seatrout to 16 inches and mangrove snapper using live shiners and a smoking shad Exude lure in Joe's, Tampa and Terra Ceia bays. Packer caught an inshore slam of snook, trout and redfish.
