Safe Boating Class at Winter Haven
Del Milligan
Carelessness is the primary cause of boating accidents in Florida waters. Speeding is a close second, and was responsible for the death of a Massachusetts man on Saturday night near Juno Beach when his 23-foot Robalo was smashed by a 28-foot boat breezing through a no-wake zone near midnight.
Driving defensively is among the subjects covered at safe boating classes offered in Polk County.
The Lakeland Sail and Power Squadron and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offer classes throughout the year.
The Lakeland Squadron begins its fall boating class on Thursday, Sept. 12, at the Chain of Lakes Complex in Winter Haven.
Classes will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday nights for eight weeks.
