Conservation district needs volunteers

FAIRFIELD - The Somerset County Soil and Water Conservation District is seeking members of the community to help in a Volunteer Watershed Survey of the Fish Brook watershed in Fairfield. A workshop/survey will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday at a farm in Fairfield Center. The survey is part of larger endeavor entitled Fish Brook BMP Implementation Project.

The project combines Environmental Protection Agency 319 funds with U.S. Department of Agriculture Dairy Belt of Maine Environmental Quality Incentive Program and Conservation Reserve Program funds. The goal of the project is to improve the trout fishery of the brook by reducing nitrogen, bacteria, and phosphorus loading by decreasing sediment and nutrient export from agricultural land, increasing dissolved oxygen.

If you are interested in learning more about the link between land use activities and water quality, you can take part in this step in improving the water quality of Fish Brook. If you would like to participate in thevolunteer watershed survey, contact the SCSWCD at 474-8324 and ask for Jeff, or e-mail him at: [email protected].
