Emergency conservation program approved

The Audubon County Farm Service Agency (FSA) has been approved to implement the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) for drought, according to Jon Meislahn, chairperson for the County Office Committee (COC). Meislahn said a sign-up period has been established from June 24, 2002, through August 23, 2002, at the FSA county office, located at 900 Fourth Avenue in Audubon. Those producers who are suffering from a lack of adequate water to sustain their livestock or commercial orchard/ vineyard operations should contact the FSA office with inquires.

Dennis Heflin, county executive director, stated There are two drought emergency practices which a producer may be eligible to apply for assistance. These practices include EC-6 for permanent installations of constructing and deepening wells, developing springs or seeps, installing pipelines to another source of water, and tanks/troughs as a temporary measure. The second practice is EC-7 for assistance to clean out ponds which have filled with silt and no longer have adequate capacity. Heflin said.

Producers wanting assistance should contact the county office before beginning or purchasing any part of the practice to complete an application. It would also be a good idea to obtain a cost estimate and bring with you at the time of application. Cost shares may be up to 50 percent for permanently installed practices and 64 percent for temporary measures and must be primarily necessary to sustain a livestock operation or a commercial orchard/vineyard. concluded Heflen. Any interested producer should contact the county office in Audubon either in person or by calling 712-563-4261.
